Packaged Goods: Good and Bad

For every product there is a process a company must go through in order to get there product selling. After the corporate identity and branding of the company they must developed a type of design for the product distribution of the goods. This is called Packaging Design. The function of packaging is to protect the commodities, goods, information conveyed, user-friendly and promotion of sales.

The main elements of packaging design are:Shelf Impression, Legibility, Appearance of Design- 2D and 3D Design, Impression of trademarks and Descriptive Features.

It is important that the overall composition of the design possesses visuals; text and images, face trademarks, colour and overall communicates the purpose of the product.

I went around my house and found some products that have good design qualities and poor design qualities.

A good Packaging design is this Blackberry box my new Torch came in. Out of all the boxes I’ve gotten its interesting that for the biggest phone they’ve put out it has the smallest box. The simplicity of the design hold a vast amount of interest. Especially knowing that they are a booming company.

Tetley Tea Products have lately revamped their packaging design. Traded in the all blue background with blocky text for some variations of colour and a vector design surrounding the descriptive features of the type of tea. Tetley’s new idea is to find a tea that fits your mood which determines your colour which then results in a word that describes your mood, giving you the type of tea you should drink.

Though they have three different typefaces on the one container, it doesn’t distract the overall design. I like that the relative information categorized in different typefaces and colour choice. The abstract vine elements compliment the heading the tea flavour (peppermint). The colours they chose are all are calming, and add to the idea of feeling “Pure” as that’s what the feeling of Peppermint gives.

Bad Packaging

This Edro Spice Product lacks in design interest. It’s boring but it does possesses the basics of packaging design. It communicates the purpose, the trademark, what is, but would collect a bit of dust on the shelf.
